Momma, it’s hot in here!

Staying hydrated during the summer months is so important as our health begins to break down when dehydrated. It is even more important for expectant moms.  In order to grow a tiny human, our bodily fluids increase significantly, so we need to increase our fluid intake too!

Dehydration during pregnancy is much more likely if we are experiencing nausea and vomiting due to morning (or all-day) sickness. It is also more common in the summer months due to the heat and increased sweating.

But how can a momma stay hydrated when we are peeing every 10 minutes, have no more room left in our bellies for large amounts of fluids and we already feel so darn swollen?!

The question isn’t “how can we” but rather “how can we afford not to be hydrated?”

Our tiny humans are dependent on our own level of hydration. If we become dehydrated while pregnant, it will affect not only our personal health but also the health of the growing baby.

So, watch for the following signs:

  • dark yellow urine
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • thirst
  • dry mouth
  • rapid pulse
  • nausea

How to avoid dehydration during pregnancy:

  • drink sips of fluid throughout the day rather than large amounts at one time
  • carry a water bottle with you to make sure you always have water on hand
  • add electrolytes to your water, or try this home made one from Wellness Mama (https://wellnessmama.com/2575/natural-sports-drink/)
  • avoid caffeine (and definitely alcohol)
  • if sweating, increase your intake of water and electrolytes

If all of these measures still leave you feeling dehydrated, book in for a Custom IV. We will replace plenty of fluids, with electrolytes and vitamins that can be helpful and supportive throughout pregnancy.  From one momma to another: before your baby arrives is the best time to create self-care habits, and staying hydrated is one of them!
