PRF and Dermal Fillers: Getting longer-lasting results from your filler
My favourite aesthetic treatment right now is the mixture of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and hyaluronic acid fillers. This unique combination awards you with both the regeneration from the growth factors and the stem cells in the PRF and the immediate volume from the fillers. This combination produces a longer-lasting, better result. There are different ways this is achieved depending on the areas treated and the desired outcome.
One of those ways is to mix PRF and filler together. This combination creates a blended mixture that is injected into the skin to work on fine lines and wrinkles. Alternatively, the filler can be injected first into the deeper layers to create structure and volume, followed by the PRF, which can be layered on top. Layering the PRF on top is an effective way to target skin health and integrity.
What is PRF?
PRF, is a solution obtained from your blood. Your blood is drawn from a vein in your arm and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells. What’s left, the PRF is plasma that contains platelets rich in growth factors and white blood cells, including mesenchymal stem cells. The PRF is then injected into different areas of the face to target regeneration where it is desired. Since there is no blood thinner added to PRF (this is how PRF is different from PRP), it clots and forms a fibrin matrix once injected. The fibrin clot slowly releases growth factors into the surrounding area for 7-10 days.
What is dermal filler?
We use hyaluronic acid-based fillers at the IV health centre. Hyaluronic acid is already something your body produces and is found within the skin; it fills the space between the collagen fibres and cells and gives volume. Part of the aging process is the gradual breakdown of hyaluronic acid, resulting in volume loss over time. Dermal fillers can be used to bring back some of this volume.
When you combine both PRF and dermal fillers, the results are outstanding.
While PRF takes time to manifest (the best result is often a year or more after the initial treatment), the filler is immediate. So, you get the lift and fullness from the filler right away while the PRF slowly does its magic in the background! Over time, filler breaks down, but as this is happening, the PRF restores the tissue, and the volume lasts much longer.
